My name is Adrienne Babb and I am currently residing and attending school in Mobile, AL. I moved to Mobile from Atlanta, GA where I attended Georgia Perimeter College. I was born in Alliance, OH and moved to Georgia with my mother and four siblings when I was twelve. I am the oldest of five children, my youngest sibling is 13 and my sibling directly under me is 24. It means a lot to me that they avoid repeating the mistakes that our parents made so I have always tried to be a good role model for them all.
I knew from the age of ten that I wanted to help children learn their true potential. My fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Thomas, instilled in me the love of reading and I still love to read. I will never forget her and the impact she had on my life and I decided that I want to help develop the same love of learning and reading for the children that I will meet and teach as an educator. While living in Atlanta almost six years ago, I met my boyfriend James and we have a four year old son together named Carter. We lived together in Atlanta trying to juggle work, home, parenthood and school when James’ mother offered to help us out by opening up her home in Mobile. She offered to help take care of our son while we attended school/work and we could not pass up the wonderful offer so here we are in Mobile. When I am not in school, I love to paint and listen to music. Creating art is my favorite way of expressing me and listening to music while painting allows me to create some of my best work.
Mrs. Procrastination
Watching Dr. Pausch’s video on time management taught me techniques to battle my problem with procrastination. Dr. Pausch’s advice of planning my days/weeks/semesters and breaking down my to-do lists into smaller steps was wonderful advice because once tasks are broken down into easier steps, a lot of my anxiety will be alleviated. Also, asking myself his suggested questions about why my goals must be reached and the consequences of not reaching them reminds me of why and how they are so important to me. I really enjoyed Dr. Pausch’s video and will use the techniques he suggests in my life.
Dr. Pausch was a professor of computer science and computer-human interaction at Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania. He is known for many lectures on topics including time management, group collaborations and also a lecture named "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams", which compiled many lectures from professionals stating what information they would share with the world if they found out it would be their last chance.
Dr. Pausch's lecture "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams" was his last lecture before he died from pancreatic cancer in 2008 but his memory is held through books he published, magazine articles published about him, scholarships in his name and news segments about his life.
Hi Adrienne! My name is Autumn and I really enjoyed reading your blog. I'm so happy that you are able to pursue your dreams of being a teacher and that family is supporting you every way you need. I also have a son; he's 3 1/2 months old. If I didn't have my sister I wouldn't be able to work and go to school. I was influenced be a elementary teacher also. You talk about your fifth grade teacher instilling the joy of reading in you. My fourth grade teacher really helped me understand math and encouraged me to keep trying. After this I liked tutoring and decided I wanted to be a teacher. I took many concepts from Dr Pausch's video to help me with stressing out. I'm glad that you also will take the advice that we need to break down semesters to weeks to days. I believe making to do lists will help us manage in Dr. Strange's class.
ReplyDeleteIt is great to have you in EDM 310! I hope that you have a great time and we want you to come to the labs anytime you have questions.
ReplyDeleteWe really like Randy Pausch here in EDM so you will be seeing him more in the semester!
@Autumn Yes, it is beautiful having someone there to help because raising a family and attending school is very time and energy consuming. Good luck to you in this class and your future career.
ReplyDelete@Stephen I am finding a balance with this class but I am already very excited about what I am learning. I have learned more in these two weeks than I have learned in my entire college experience and look forward to exploring and learning more.
